    The much-talked-about 8th draft coal policy was not approved at the Advisory Council meeting due to strong differences over the issues of payment of royalty, acquisition of land, and quite a large number of ambiguities in it. Sources at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources told The New Nation yesterday that the draft coal policy was sent back to the ministry concerned for further scrutiny. Besides, the meeting of the Council of Advisers held on Wednesday in Chittagong suggested to make the draft coal policy smaller in size removing all the ambiguities.

  • Ctg businesses for speedy gas exploration to face crisis

The businesses of Chittagong that have a concentration on heavy industries are also apprehending that new investment in Chittagong may come to a standstill due to government's recent decision not to give any new gas connection in the region. They said the decision would not only frustrate the entrepreneurs but also seriously hold back the flow of foreign direct investment in the country.

    The high-powered committee formed to suggest policy in order to overcome gas and power crises in Chittagong will hold a national-level meeting at Chittagong Circuit House today. Chief Adviser's Special Assistant for Power and Energy Affairs M Tamim and Special Assistant for Post, Telegraph and Tele-communications MA Malek will attend the meeting as members of the committee with Commerce and Education Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman in the chair.

  • 6-point demand to end energy crisis in Ctg region

    A high-powered committee Monday renewed its position to resolve grinding crisis of gas and power in Chittagong region. The National Committee, which draws representatives from the government and the private sector, placed a six-point charter of recommendations to free the economically important region of pervasive energy shortages. Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed formed the 15-member committee on July 3 to specially focus on the energy sector, as the government is struggling to feed the energy-hungry factories amid growing demand.
