The demand of forest produce for this huge population on the limited natural resources eg. the land and forests, makes it almost impossible to met from the notified forest area which is only 13.32% only.

An expert committee set up by the Environment Department, Government of West Bengal released a draft policy on wetlands, which suggests that filling up of water bodies should be prohibited by the state government.

The District Human Development Report (DHDR) of South 24-Parganas released on 12th July 2010, says 15% of Sunderbans may be submerged by 2020. The report identifies the most pressing developmental constraints of the district.
