The International Energy Agency (IEA) on Wednesday said the drive to clean up the world’s energy system had stalled. IEA Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven told the 23-member Clean Energy Ministerial despite much talk by world leaders and a boom in renewable energy through the last decade, the average unit of energy produced on Wednesday was “as dirty as it was 20 years ago”.

That could lead to a more than 10 per cent cut in overall US pollution into the atmosphere, with consumer-driven cars and small trucks currently responsible for 17 per cent of the nation's greenhouse gas emissions, said the study.

Mahindra and Mahindra, on Monday, launched its all-electric four-seater passenger car, the e2o, with price starting at Rs.5.96 lakh.

The car is developed by Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles (formerly Reva Electric Car Company), and will replace its predecessor Reva, India’s first electric car. “The launch of the Mahindra e2o marks an important milestone for the Mahindra Group…this is not just about selling a car, it is about telling people to change their lifestyle. We are working at creating an ecosystem that includes mobility solutions along with other environment-friendly innovations,” Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra told reporters here.

Hinduja Group flagship firm Ashok Leyland said it has introduced a range of haulage trucks fitted with twin speed rear axles and other modifications for enhanced fuel efficiency of up to 10 per cent.

Deployed on 25 and 31 tonne trucks in both 6x2 and 8x2 configurations, the new set of technologies are custom designed for the Ashok Leyland driveline, with the twin speed axle being the primary change.

Petroleum Ministry seeks setting up of an inter-ministerial group to draw up an action plan for pollution issues

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry has sought setting up of an inter-ministerial Committee (IMC) with representatives from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the Ministry of Heavy Industries, Urban Development and Public Enterprises and the Ministry of Environment and Forests to draw up a roadmap for reduction of pollution.
