Only 50 of the 1.72 lakh borewells in City registered with KGA

Two months have passed since the State government issued a notification, making registration of all borewells and permission for sinking of new borewells mandatory in the State. However, so far only 25 drilling agencies in the State and just over 80 households in the City have registered with the Karnataka Groundwater Authority (KGA). The government notification called for compulsory registration under the Karnataka Groundwater (Regulation and Control of Development and Management) Act, 2011, wherein every existing user of groundwater in the notified area has to register within a period of 120 days from December 3, 2012.

Lawyers’ statements come in handy for Opposition to corner the govt

Launching an attack against the State government for “suddenly changing its stand” with regard to the notification of the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT), the Opposition parties have demanded that the government should submit a detailed explanation on the matter. A day after the Supreme Court pronounced its verdict directing the Centre to notify the 2007 award of the CWDT, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah alleged in the Assembly that the BJP government had abruptly made a U-turn.

BDA told to ensure space for garbage disposal in new layouts

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Monday informed the High Court that it has constituted 182 ward committees out of 198 wards in the City. The Court has asked the Palike to upload the names of the committee members on its website. Submitting the Palike report on the action taken to tackle garbage menace in the City, the counsel for the civic agency stated that some of the ward committees had already conducted their meetings.

The BBMP is planning to withdraw trade licences of shops and business establishments who do not properly manage garbage.

The BBMP also plans to introduce the Self Assessment Scheme (SAS) for the traders to declare on their own the space used by them for commercial activities. Based on the SAS, the Palike will issue trade licences. The BBMP Special Commissioner K R Niranjan said the Palike would make such provision to ensure cleanliness in the City.

‘Wake Up, Clean Up Bengaluru’, the City’s largest waste management event, started on Sunday

The week-long garbage mela, jointly organised by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and Bangalore Connect, showcases solutions to the garbage menace that has plagued the City. “To drive home the point, a replica of a landfill was created inside the Freedom Park, with garbage brought in from Mavallipura landfill,” said Dandagi Gurupad, one of the co-organisers of the event.

Palike admits to delay in completion of the work

A grant of Rs 192 crore provided to the City under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) for remodelling primary and secondary Storm Water Drains (SWDs) across four valleys —Vrishabhavathi, Challaghatta, Hebbal and Koramanagala — seems to have literally gone down the drain.
According to Bruhat Bengalurur Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials, a fresh proposal to remodel the drains in the 800 sq km area under the Palike will replace the JnNURM scheme meant initially to cover 257 km of storm water drains in the four valleys.

Many companies have evinced interest in setting up garbage processing units

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) commissioner Siddaiah was woken up to the garbage mess that’s left the city scarred along with some of its outskirts. He asserted that there would be no more landfills around Bangalore for dumping waste. The city has been facing a major garbage disposal crisis from August 2012. Expressing remorse over the Mandur mess, Siddaiah said: “Though there were two processing units in Mandur, not even a kilo of garbage was processed all these years

In an attempt to address the glaring lack of awareness on waste segregation among the public, the State Government has decided to impart lessons right from school level.

The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and the Department of State Education, Research and Training (DSERT) will introduce ‘Solid Waste Management’ as a ‘co-curricular’ subject for Class IX and Class X students in all schools across the State from next academic year. The co-curricular activity will be mandatorily implemented in government, BBMP as well as private management schools which are registered under the State Government syllabi.

The ambitious project will provide infrastructure facilities at a cost of Rs 2,100 crore

The State Cabinet on Thursday gave its nod to implement a project aimed at decongesting Bangalore City by developing eight small towns around it at a cost of Rs 2,100 crore - a move seen as an attempt by the ruling BJP to please the electorate in the State capital ahead of the Assembly elections. Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Urban Development Minister Suresh Kumar said the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) had identified eight clusters around Bangalore where the project would be implemented keeping in view future growth.

Move May Run Into Citizens’ Resistance

Bangalore: Get set for allocating some space in your neighbourhood park or playground for the BBMP to set up its waste segregation unit.

Pushed to the wall over the way the garbage crisis has been handled, the civic body has turned to vacant spaces. “My target is to set up dry waste collection centres in all the 198 wards of Bangalore in 2-3 months’ time. The question is: where do we set them up? We have decided to take up portions of playgrounds and parks to establish these units. I’m aware there will be resistance, but we have no choice. There is no other land available for us,” BBMP commissioner Siddaiah told TOI on Thursday.
