There is a ray of hope for hundreds of urban waterbodies, victims of urbanisation and industrial pollution. A combination of bio-ozolyte treatment process and bio-remediation adopted by the State government to save the Ooty Lake, can be used to recover these polluted water bodies.

According to officials, phosphorus and nitrogen are responsible for the rapid growth of water hyacinth, that has invaded many water bodies. The bio-processes will increase the dissolved oxygen (DO), by bringing down the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). DO improves quality of water and replenishes life in water bodies.

Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) had found Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), income tax department, government circuit house and police among those responsible for releasing sewage waters directly into Tapi.

Fatehabad DC orders pollution check

Following a spate of reports about prevalence of cancer in villages adjoining the Ghaggar, allegedly due to its polluted water, Fatehabad Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr Saket Kumar today asked the officials concerned to find a solution to the problem. Villagers from over six villages had recently apprised Dr Saket Kumar about the alarming trend during his visit to the Ghaggar near Chandpura. The DC had gone there to review flood-control measures in the area.

PANJIM: United Breweries and United Spirits – flagship companies of liquor baron Vijay Mallya, are under the scanner with the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) issuing show cause notices to them for allegedly discharging effluent into the Curti Ponda nullah.

The board also found that samples from the from the effluent and sewage treatment plants are not “meeting prescribed limits,” Minister for Environment and Forests Alina Saldanha told the legislative assembly on Wednesday.

Delhi’s common effluent treatment plants, located in industrial areas to treat industrial waste, suffer from a unique problem.
