Department for Transport argues that proposal will delay agreement on 2015 and 2020 targets

The Centre for Science and Environment, a New Delhi-based public interest research and advocacy organisation, has called for a public transport strategy for the Northeast.

The long-awaited three-level underground parking facility at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) became operational today here nine months after it was constructed.

The multi-level parking facility, whose foundation stone was laid down in October 2011 and constructed with the stipulated project cost of Rs 53.57 crore in August 2012, has a capacity to park over 434 four-wheelers.

The European Parliament's Environment Committee today voted for new cars sold to achieve an average fuel economy of 95g per kilometre, or 3.9 litres per 100km, by 2020 from the current 130 grams.

EU politicians on Wednesday backed a compromise deal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles from 2020 and also called for a 2025 target that would make cars even more fuel efficient.

Eyes higher contributions from emerging markets

Honda Cars India Ltd., on Tuesday, said it planned to invest Rs.2,500 crore in India by next year to set up a car assembly line, a diesel engine component unit and a forging plant at its Tapukara facility in Rajasthan. The company will also launch five vehicles over the next three year as the Japanese auto giant eyes higher contributions from emerging markets, including India.

The Electric Vehicles Initiative (EVI) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have launched the Global EV Outlook representing two years of data gathering and analysis of electric vehicle stock/sales and charging station deployment.

Mahindra and Mahindra, on Monday, launched its all-electric four-seater passenger car, the e2o, with price starting at Rs.5.96 lakh.

The car is developed by Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles (formerly Reva Electric Car Company), and will replace its predecessor Reva, India’s first electric car. “The launch of the Mahindra e2o marks an important milestone for the Mahindra Group…this is not just about selling a car, it is about telling people to change their lifestyle. We are working at creating an ecosystem that includes mobility solutions along with other environment-friendly innovations,” Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra told reporters here.

Current policies on containing air pollution, particularly in cities, are regressive

Our health is not on anybody's agenda. Or we just don't seem to make the connections between the growing burden of disease and the deteriorating condition of our environment. We don't really believe science, which tells us each passing day how toxins affect our bodies, leading to high rates of both morbidity and mortality. It is true that it is difficult to establish cause and effect; but we know more than enough to say that air pollution is today a leading cause of both disease and death in India and other parts of South Asia.

Europe faces a significant economic challenge. Ahead lies the task of reining in public debt, revitalizing stagnant economies and creating new opportunities for millions of jobless workers. At the same time, the European Union has committed to playing a lead role in tackling climate change.
