Climate change could get worse quickly if huge amounts of extra heat absorbed by the oceans are released back into the air, scientists said after unveiling new research showing that oceans have hel

For nearly 20 years, any company interested in green energy has known exactly where the global epicentre of renewable power is located: Europe.

Says these cities are very vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to sea level rise and coastal flooding

Rising sea levels due to climate change are threatening the survival of big cities located near coastal areas like Kolkata, Shanghai and Dhaka, said Dr R K Pachauri, chairperson of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). "There is a very high risk in delta cities like Kolkata, Shanghai and Dhaka. They are very vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to sea level rise and coastal flooding. Both people and property would be affected in such a scenario," Pachauri told reporters here.

Focus was on Maharashtra as the State has been reeling under drought

With Maharashtra being mauled by a drought worse than the one it faced in 1972, the Indian chapter of the Global Legislators’ Organisation for a Balanced Environment (GLOBE) met State legislators and parliamentarians here to increase awareness of the impact of climate change at the State and district levels. In a discussion hosted by the British High Commission in support of projects involving GLOBE and the Climate Parliament, Rajya Sabha member Vandana Chavan said the current drought was a grim pointer that ought to put climate change high on the agenda of top legislators representing Maharashtra.

I never thought I’d favor nuclear power. But here it is: I believe nuclear energy is our last best chance to stem the tide of climate change. Time is running out for reversing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning from the fossil fuel age. Nuclear power must occupy a larger share of our energy mix and replace coal-fired power plants. For energy policy, I think “near-term” decisions should still favor: (1) energy efficiency; (2) big wind; and (3) small solar. But nuclear power is going to be needed, too. (Comment)
