North India continues to face an unrelenting cold wave as temperatures in most parts of the region on Sunday stayed low and water bodies in the Kashmir Valley remained frozen.

It was a sunny but chilly Sunday in Delhi, with the minimum temperature taking a slight dip from the normal level. The low for the day was recorded at 7.0 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal. Though fog covered the city in the early hours, the thin veil gave way to the sun as the day progressed.

The Valley is witnessing severe cold wave conditions with the temperature continuing to remain several degrees below the freezing point.

In Srinagar city, the mercury fell overnight to minus 5.5°C, which is nearly three degrees below the average normal and lowest temperature of the season so far, an official of the Meteorological Department said. Srinagar witnessed minus 4.9°C on Sunday night, minus 4.6°C on Saturday night and minus 5.4°C on Friday night.

Twenty-nine people succumbed to the intense cold wave in North India on Tuesday as temperatures dropped to sub-zero levels at many places in the region.

Delhiites froze under chilly winds and the biting cold with the minimum temperature plunging to 3.3 degrees Celsius. Though Tuesday’s minimum was up by almost a degree from the previous day, icy winds forced many people to stay indoors during morning hours. Tuesday’s minimum was four degrees below normal level at this time of the season, said the weatherman. The maximum temperature was 15.5.

JAMMU/srinagar: While the day temperature in Jammu has broken about 30 years old record by remaining nearly 11 degree Celsius below normal today, the night temperature in the winter capital has further depleted to 4.3 degree Celsius from 6 degree Celsius, just in past 24 hours whereas, the cold wave conditions and fog continued to play havoc with the people in the State and other parts of northern region for the last about one week.

SRINAGAR/ JAMMU: There was no respite from intense cold and freezing temperature as the mercury plummeted further below the freezing point across the Kashmir today. The freezing temperature coupled with erratic power cuts has made the life difficult for the people in the Valley. Fringes of the world famous Dal Lake were frozen for the third consecutive day today, forcing the ‘Shikara’ owners to break the ice with their oars for rowing their Shikaras (boats). Some of the water taps were also frozen during the preceding night leading to temporary water crisis.

North India was gripped by bone chilling cold on Thursday as temperatures nosedived across the region claiming nine more lives. Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 12.7 degrees Celsius, eight less than normal, and a minimum of 4.4 degrees Celsius, three less than the usual.
