To cater to the energy requirements of the armed forces in remote snow-bound areas, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is exploring the potential of tapping wind power to generate energy.

While the Himalayan ridges are known for their high wind potential, accumulation of heavy snow and ice in that region is a critical factor that adversely affects sensitive structures and also jams moving parts in turbines.

Rajasthan is set to play a major role in solar and renewable energy, according to its Governor Margaret Alva.

Rajasthan is a national leader in solar energy and under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, a majority of the solar projects are located in Rajasthan. In wind energy, India is globally positioned at No. 5, generating 11,000 MW after the U.S., Germany, China and Spain,” she said.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has released around Rs 153.46 crore during the last five years targeted at various renewable energy programmes in Tamil Nadu. New and Renewable Energy minister, Farooq Abdullah, said in Rajya Sabha recently that the ministry had been supporting the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency for the deployment of renewable energy.

The Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) has directed the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to provide an environment that will help promote generation of solar power in the State.

The board and other licensees should support individual initiatives for development of solar energy, the commission said in an order issued on Tuesday. The State government has published the draft of a Kerala Solar Energy Policy, 2013, it reminded the KSEB and other licensees.

He regretted that the goal of stabilising global temperatures at acceptable levels was nowhere in sight.
