In a big boost to the Metrolink Express between Gandhinagar and Express (MEGA), the Central Government has finally proposed a provision of Rs 6,450.75 crore assistance for all metro rail projects for the current fiscal of 2013-14. The assistance has been announced as a central tax reimbursement for the projects, wherein MEGA would receive Rs 10.1 crore this year.

The Union Urban Development Ministry wants cities to do more than just express intent to have a metro railway system. The Ministry is annoyed that cities have been limiting their role to submitting a detailed project report and attaching an application for the Centre to approve and fund their metro systems.

A senior official of the Ministry on Wednesday said cities should play a more proactive role and emulate Kochi’s determination to get the metro project sanctioned.

AHMEDABAD: The forest department, in order to improve environmental status of the city, has decided to convert wasteland or common land in urban spaces into well-planted green areas.

If there was shortage of such land, a city could utilize the vacant land in the areas situated on the periphery, under the urban development authorities, an official from the department said.

AHMEDABAD: In order to make multi-utility spaces in urban areas viable and add to the revenue of civic agencies, Gandhinagar Urban Development Authority (Guda) plans to set up windmill-powered utility centers.

This unique utility centre will act as a bus-stop, have space for advertisement display, a small cafeteria and sitting space. The centre will be powered by a small windmill and a solar panel and will draw little electricity from the main grid.

Charankha (Patan): Gandhinagar residents will soon get a chance to become green entrepreneurs. For, they will be able to rent out their roof tops to solar power generation companies, who will pay them on the number of units generated.

In the first phase, panels will be installed on atop 50 government building and around 200 households to generate 5 MW solar power. The state government also plans to develop Gandhinagar as India’s model solar city.

GANDHINAGAR: The state government is now preparing a final draft plan to install water meters in the state capital. The move came after the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) asked the state government to install water meters in the government quarters.

Sources said that a study by Asian Development Bank has revealed that the state capital's water per capita water consumption is the highest among 20 major cities in the country.

AHMEDABAD: The city has over 30 lakh vehicles, which include 20 lakh two-wheelers. This is 22 per cent of the total vehicles registered in Gujarat, the state assembly on Thursday was informed by urban development minister Nitin Patel in his reply to Naroda MLA Mayaben Kodnani's question.

The minister said that to ease off congestion on the city roads, the government has taken measures like Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) and Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro project.
