Guwahati: Moved by the plight of children of AIDS victims, Governor of Assam, Janaki Ballav Patnaik, on Tuesday announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh to help Assam Network of Positive (ANP+) people, an NGO working for these children, according to a Raj Bhavan source.

The Governor along with first lady Jayanti Patnaik, on Tuesday met a delegation comprising of workers, children and officials of Assam Network of Positive People (ANP+) at the Raj Bhavan here.

Jaipur: As instances of lifestyle diseases are on the rise, the state government is intensifying the fight to check its growing threat on the urban as well as the rural population. In one such effort, free test for diabetes will be launched in the state soon. The state government is already providing free diabetes medicines including Metformin capsules, Glimepiride tablets, and insulin under the chief minister free medicine scheme.

The programme was started at six centres in Tamil Nadu

The Chennai-based National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis (formerly Tuberculosis Research Centre) has started a pilot testing programme of providing for six months isoniazid TB drug as prophylactic to HIV-positive individuals. People recruited will include those on antiretroviral therapy (ART) too. The programme was started about two months ago at six centres in Tamil Nadu (including two ART centres in Chennai) and it got under way recently in Bangalore, New Delhi and Hyderabad. The ART centres were chosen by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO).

PANJIM: The quarterly meeting of TB forum of the Voluntary Health Association of Goa on Monday identified five villages where steps would be taken to create awareness about tuberculosis and help villagers to move towards elimination of the disease.

The villages are Parra, Karapur-Sarvan, Pariyem-Sanquelim, Betki and Carambolim. Executive Director VHAG Dr Cynthia Pinto said these villages have been identified under Axshya project, which was implemented in Goa in 2011 to improve the reach, visibility and effectiveness of the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) through civil society.

Holding the department of health and family welfare responsible for the deprivation of basic health care in West Garo Hills, the CAG directly stated that patient care suffered due to shortage of Community Health Centres (CHCs) Public Health Centres (CHCS) and Sub centres (SCs) and inadequate infrastructure like non-functional operation theatres, lack of ultra sound,ECG and 24x 7 diagnostic services, besides the absence of medical specialist.
