AGRA: Agra district authorities have ordered the closure of an engineering college near a bird sanctuary for violating environmental laws, an official said on Thursday.

District magistrate Zuher-Bin-Sagir asked the wildlife department to seal Anand Engineering College, on the periphery of eco-sensitive Soor Sarovar Bird Sanctuary on the Delhi-Agra highway, 20 km from here, an official said.

Survey To Update Records Hit Hard By Official Negligence

New Delhi: In 2002, Delhi has 177 listed water bodies. By 2006 this number went up to 629. Subsequently, an additional 200 have been identified. However, no exact figure is available as several of the original 629 have disappeared. In fact, many water bodies that still exist are not even listed on revenue records.
Despite a court-appointed committee surveying these water bodies on a regular basis, the government has made no change to its 2006 list. Consequently, encroachers are taking over several water bodies under the nose of land-owning agencies.

After cancelling its licence to sell 12 varieties of Bt cotton seeds last year, the State government has allowed Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company (Mahyco) to sell the seeds in the coming kharif season, subject to certain conditions.

Confirming this, State agriculture commissioner Umakant Dangat told The Hindu on Monday that Mahyco had given an affidavit to him stating that the company would supply 10 lakh packets of Bt cotton seeds of the popular MRC 7351 variety.
