A scheme to regularise land holdings in the Amazon forest faces many obstacles

Chandigarh: The UT Administration on Thursday announced a compensation of Rs 18.75 lakh per acre for the acquisition of land in Manimajra for the Phase III construction of the Rajiv Gandhi Chandigarh Technology Park.

The landowners, however, were a disgruntled lot after the announcement.

New Delhi: In the backdrop of protests against land acquisitions and SEZs that have stalled various projects, the UPA Government has decided to get the Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2007, and the Bill to amend the Land Acquisition Act cleared by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

IN an attempt to prevent skirmishes of the kind that left the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government badly bruised in the wake of Nandigram and Singur clashes, the Manmohan Singh government is racing against time to get the Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill, 2007, and the Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2007, passed in the remaining two days of Parliament.

It is a positive sign that the Government of India has finally realised the vulnerability of Assam and other parts of the North East to natural disasters like earthquake and floods and deployed one battalion of the newly formed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to deal with any such eventuality.
