Mandi: A number of roads in areas around Mandi town remained closed for hours due to landslides, triggered by rain, in the last 24 hours.

The death toll in a landslip at Kadavoor in Ernakulam district rose to five today with the recovery of the body of a man, police said.

Landslides killed more than 32,000 people across the world from 2004 to 2010 - up to 10 times more than previously thought, the first detailed study of the disasters showed on Thursday.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said that the State government will supplement the compensation available to farmers, who had lost their crops in floods and landslips in Kozhikode and Kannur district early this month, under Central norms.

Thus they would get two to three times the compensation compared to what was available under Central norms, he said after a meeting of the Cabinet here on Tuesday.

A day after landslips and flash floods triggered by heavy rain created havoc in Kozhikode, the district administration prepared a preliminary report on Wednesday pegging the total loss and cost of rehabilitation at Rs.200 crore even as over 200 affected people are lodged in a local school and parish hall in the calamity-hit region.

As many as 130 calamity-hit people are accommodated at the Anakkampoyil parish hall in Thiruvambadi while the Vimala Upper Primary School at neighbouring Manjuvayal area houses another 86 persons.

The heavy rain, landslips, and floods that devastated many areas in Kozhikode and Kannur districts in the last two days have claimed at least nine lives. Eight persons, five of them from a family, were buried alive in multiple landslips accompanied by heavy rain in the Pulloorampara area in Kozhikode district on Monday and a child drowned at Iritty in Kannur district.

Many areas in North India received rain on Monday while some stared at floods and landslides due to incessant downpour. In Uttar Pradesh, swollen rivers in the eastern districts have sent alarm bells ringing, forcing many people in several villages to seek shelter at safer places. The Ghaghra and Saryu in Gonda and Ayodhya, flowing above the danger mark, have forced residents of over a dozen villages to rush to safer places and some 2,000 people have taken shelter on the roadside.
