With the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) approving a hike in parking rates in areas under its jurisdiction, users of surface level parking facilities will have to dole out twice as much starting June. The Council at its meeting on Wednesday approved a new parking policy which will rationalise the parking system and have increased rates based on the area and the opportunity cost involved.

Pune: Villagers from Phursungi and Uruli on Tuesday blocked trucks carrying waste from entering the garbage depot to protest against the Pune Municipal Corporation’s inability to control the fire raging at the landfill site since Sunday.
The fire that spread to surrounding piles of waste grew worse on Tuesday. The villagers claimed that three acres of the landfill site had caught fire and clouds of smoke posed a health hazard for them.

ALLAHABAD: After Maha Kumbh, the 22 crossroads of the city are set to wear a new look, as officials of Allahabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) have decided to take up solar powered traffic signal system with the help of a Delhi-based firm under the public-private partnership (PPP ) model.

As part of its pilot project of 2012, solar panels, signal lights and other equipment were installed at four major crossings including Subhash crossing and Rana Pratap crossing but due to Kumbh preparations, the project could not be taken up.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Southern Bench, on Monday refused to entertain a plea from the Pallavaram Municipality to allow it to dump garbage in the Pallavaram ‘Periya Eri’ till the establishment of a solid waste management facility at an alternative site is completed.

The bench ordered the filing of a status report on the alternative arrangements being made by the authority to consider any action in the issue.
When the matter came up for hearing before the bench of judicial member Justice M Chockalingam and expert member Prof R Nagendran, N R Chandran, senior counsel representing the municipality, said that consent had been obtained to establish a solid waste management facility at a site in Venkatamangalam.

Members of the Russell Market Traders’ Association and traders will get a waste-to-energy plant installed at the market by next week.

The market, which houses around 480 shops, produces nearly 12-15 tonnes of garbage daily, out of which seven tonnes are wet waste alone. To minimise the waste and use it towards a productive end, the Association decided to instal a waste-consuming energy generator.
“The decision was made after a meeting on April 2,” explained Mohammed Idris Choudhary, the general secretary of the Association. “All shop vendors were consulted about this new technology.

Pune: The municipal corporations of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad have been told to implement pay-and-park scheme in congested areas.

This is one of the 12-point action plan finalized at a high-level meeting convened by additional chief secretary (home) Amitabh Rajan for solving traffic problems of the city last week. The two corporations have also been asked to ensure there are no encroachments affecting movement of pedestrians and traffic.

A huge fire that broke out at the garbage depot in Phursungi-Uruli on Sunday afternoon was not completely extinguished till late Monday evening, villagers said. They complained of irritation in the eyes and difficulty in breathing as the smoke pervaded the area surrounding both villages. The villagers, who have been protesting for years against the very presence of the garbage dump, have threatened to block garbage trucks from entering the depot if the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) fails to put out the fire by Tuesday evening.

Of the 100 wards of the civic body, 79 wards do not experience water crisis while the rest need immediate attention from the authorities. Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa had a meeting on Friday with councillors and Assistant Engineers to discuss the water availability and supply scenario.
