River Noyyal faces a slow death

Tirupur: Amid severe drinking water shortage experienced in the city and rapid deterioration of River Noyyal taking place owing to indiscriminate discharge of industrial effluents into it, yet another World Water Day was observed here on Monday.

Tirupur: The dyeing units are fasting paying the arrears from the total fine of Rs 67.65 crore imposed on them by the Supreme Court for loss of ecology, towards cleaning of Orathupalayam dam and polluting River Noyyal, as January 5 deadline to remit the fines has neared.

THE Dyers Association of Tirupur (DAT) has postponed its indefinite strike scheduled for Monday to December 1, following an assurance from the State government that the issue of levying a fine ordered by the SC would be looked into in six weeks.

THE Thamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam has demanded the closure of all dyeing units along the Noyyal, Cauvery and Bavani rivers and the Kalingarayan canal to protect farm lands from pollution.

Supreme Court judgement dated 06/10/2009 on river Noyyal pollution. The Court was of the opinion that there has been unabated pollution by the members of Tirupur Dyeing Factory Owners. They cannot escape the responsibility to meet out the expenses of reversing the ecology. They are bound to meet the expenses of removing the sludge of the river.
