Fewer European countries could face fines for breaching air pollution limits after recession slowed industrial activity and limits on sulfur emissions kicked in.

A daily health advisory in Delhi to warn people about the noxious air quality may be on its way.

The advisory intends to inform the public about the levels of carbon monoxide, ozone and other hazardous particles in the air, helping warn those with vulnerable lungs and also encouraging the public to curb unnecessary emissions. There are already six monitoring stations across the city that document the levels of air pollution on the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) website in real time. However, there is no way to easily interpret the data.

The city has joined the list of the country's most polluted cities, with high level of particulate matter being detected in downtown Pune.

A sure shot indication of how polluted its air is evident in the latest data of the System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) that shows high concentration of particulate matter 2.5 or PM-2.5 as they call it. (See graphics) Evidently, concentration has crossed permissible levels in the past eight days (February 20-28).

In an effort to prove that pollution affects the rich and the powerful as much as the common man and the homeless, a court-appointed body is working to put up an air monitoring device on Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's house.

The monitor would specifically detect levels of ground-level ozone, which is created when sunlight interacts with emissions from vehicle exhaust, chemical solvents and other sources and turns it into an imminent, floating hazard.

A new United Nations plan to involve all nations in marshalling science to fix environmental problems ranging from toxic chemicals to climate change will be put to the test from Monday at talks in
