Slum-dwellers in cities will now be able to avail health facilities

Urban poor, especially those living in slums, will now have access to primary healthcare services in cities and towns with the Cabinet recently approving the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) to function as a sub-mission under the overarching National Health Mission which also caters to rural populations.
To be implemented in 779 cities and towns with over 50,000 population, the NUHM aims to cover 7.75 crore people. Meant for the urban poor, it will primarily target the urban slum population of 68 million (6 crore) as revealed by the 2011 Census.

The health policy prepared by a panel of experts has recommended a complete reorganization of the government health system by introducing primary care providers along the lines of the family physician concept. The policy, which would be released for public debate on Saturday, points out the inadequacy of the presentday primary health care system to respond to certain challenges such as non-communicable diseases, mental health issues and geriatric care.

Pune: The state health department is set to screen over 1.95 crore children below 18 years of age across the state and provide free follow-up treatments if required through district and tertiary level hospitals as part of a new scheme under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). Called the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), the scheme, with an estimated state budget of Rs 130 crore for 2013-14, will be formally launched at Palghar, a tribal block in Thane, on Wednesday.

A Central Government appointed high-level team constituting the 6th Common Review Mission (CRM) under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) has commenced concurrent evaluation and review of development works taken up in the district under NRHM, on Sunday.

The CRM team would be assessing the progress of NRHM works on 24 parameters relating to core strategies and central areas of concern by visiting the District Headquarters hospital, taluk and non-taluk level government hospitals, Primary Health Centres (PHCs), health sub-centres and villages over five days.

As many as 74,639 children in the State were identified as severely malnourished during health check-up camps conducted by the Health and Family Welfare department in July-August this year. The department has, however, no record to indicate the status of any of these children. To rectify this major flaw and to bring about accountability among the medical staff of the primary health centres (PHCs) and the nutritional rehabilitation centres (NRCs), the department is in the process of evolving a web-based application, which will help track and monitor the progress of children identified under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) programme.
