Relief to farmers hurt by Ajit Pawar’s remark

Even if Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar responded to the demand for water in Solapur in crude terms, the Bombay High Court has stepped in to give relief to farmers in the parched district in western Maharashtra.
The court on Tuesday asked the State government to release water from upstream reservoirs to the Ujani dam which is bone dry. The Bombay High Court on Friday asked the Maharashtra government and others to file a response to a petition opposing construction of a sugar factory in Aashti village of Solapur district on the grounds that it would damage ecology and pollute environment.

The district in Maharashtra is one of the few refuges for the rare Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps), endemic to the grasslands of India and Pakistan. Of the 30-35 birds remaining in Maharashtra, Solapur’s grasslands support the largest population—25. But residents are not keen to protect the bird, called maldhok locally, because they perceive the Great Indian Bustard sanctuary as the stumbling block to the region’s development.
