BDA told to ensure space for garbage disposal in new layouts

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Monday informed the High Court that it has constituted 182 ward committees out of 198 wards in the City. The Court has asked the Palike to upload the names of the committee members on its website. Submitting the Palike report on the action taken to tackle garbage menace in the City, the counsel for the civic agency stated that some of the ward committees had already conducted their meetings.

The BBMP is planning to withdraw trade licences of shops and business establishments who do not properly manage garbage.

The BBMP also plans to introduce the Self Assessment Scheme (SAS) for the traders to declare on their own the space used by them for commercial activities. Based on the SAS, the Palike will issue trade licences. The BBMP Special Commissioner K R Niranjan said the Palike would make such provision to ensure cleanliness in the City.

The week-long garbage mela, jointly organised by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and Bangalore Connect, showcases solutions to the garbage menace that has plagued the City. “To drive home the point, a replica of a landfill was created inside the Freedom Park, with garbage brought in from Mavallipura landfill,” said Dandagi Gurupad, one of the co-organisers of the event.

Jaipur: The environment report card is out and Rajasthan is among the worst performers in the country. A latest compendium of “Environment Statistics India 2012” released by the ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MOSPI) indicates that Rajasthan’s environment situation is appalling.

The state has the fifth highest consumption for pesticides in the country. This despite Rajasthan’s contribution to agriculture being under 10% nationally. Moreover, agrarian states like Punjab and Haryana have witnessed a dip in usage of pesticides even as it goes up in Rajasthan. The report noted that the due to excess use of pesticides, organisms develop resistance and lead to major health issues.

In an attempt to address the glaring lack of awareness on waste segregation among the public, the State Government has decided to impart lessons right from school level.

The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and the Department of State Education, Research and Training (DSERT) will introduce ‘Solid Waste Management’ as a ‘co-curricular’ subject for Class IX and Class X students in all schools across the State from next academic year. The co-curricular activity will be mandatorily implemented in government, BBMP as well as private management schools which are registered under the State Government syllabi.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has banned dumping of debris, including solid waste, on Yamuna river banks to avert the “serious threat” of water pollution and directed the governments of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh to remove the rubble immediately.

“Debris is being thrown on the river banks and it is a serious threat to the change of course as well as water pollution of river Yamuna. Certain directions need to be issued forthwith in order to ensure that pollution of Yamuna is prevented and the debris from the site removed.
