Maharashtra’s Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR), a successful model for tiger conservation, is facing a new problem in the shape of tourists. Camera-toting holidaymakers are shelling out big bucks to local tourist guides to go deep into the core area of the national park for “exclusive” pictures of the big cat.

Wildlife officials posted at the resort say guides ferry tourists in Gypsies deep into the reserve in order to spot a tiger. Once the animal is sighted, these shutter-happy tourists surround it to get close-up shots.

Survey Part Of Countrywide Study At Tiger Reserves For Exact Count Of The Cats

Pune: The state forest department has captured images of more than 141 fully grown tigers in Maharashtra’s four tiger reserves and their surrounding areas. The ‘camera-trapping survey’ that is going on across protected areas in the country to estimate the number of tigers is now its fourth phase and officials in the state said they have carried it out in the tiger reserves of Tadoba- Andhari, Melghat, Sahyadri and Pench.

The State has four major tiger reserves, six national parks and 36 wildlife sanctuaries, which adds up to 15,732 sq km.

Advisories To Deal With Situations When Big Cats Stray Into Human Habitats

Pune: The chief wildlife warden of Maharashtra has issued advisories to the state’s four tiger reserves —Sahyadri Tiger Reserve in Kolhapur, Tadoba-Andhari in Chandrapur, Pench in Nagpur and Melghat in Amravati — to follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) recently released by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), framed to deal with emergencies arising because of tigers straying into humandominated landscapes.

Even as several instances of poaching were reported recently, forest officials on Thursday announced that 65 tigers are inhabiting the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR).

The authorities have arrived at the figure after a tiger monitoring exercise was conducted in the reserve between April 1 and May 31, during which the movements of felines were monitored with the help 94 camera traps.
According to Veerendra Tiwari, TATR’s chief conservator of forests and field director, there were at least 65 tigers in the area, excluding 20 cubs, which is an encouraging sign.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), which has been set up to protect the striped animal, is looking for a '˜ferocious wild cat' for its flagship logo.
