Asia has the world's highest concentration of two and three wheelers, both in absolute terms and as a fraction of overall road vehicle population. In many Asian cities, these vehicles account for 50 to 90% of the total vehicle fleet of which a large percentage are powered by two stroke engines. The main pollutants of concern from 2-stroke three wheelers are hydrocarbons and particulate matter.

In a year in which the Lok Sabha elections are due and a hobbling economy has spread widespread anxiety in the cities, the quasi-ban on Kolkata's polluting auto rickshaws is like the last straw for the state government.

The Calcutta High Court will now monitor implementation of phasing out two-stroke autorickshaws in the city. It has asked the state government to submit action taken reports every 15 days to the court.

A mobile court of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority on Thursday filed 62 cases against similar number of CNG-run auto-rickshaws and realised Tk 6.21 lakh in fines for playing the vehicles illegally in the capital.
The court, during in its drive in the city's Postagola area, also seized 16 CNG auto-rickshaws for not having any documents and failing to pay the fine.

A autorickshaw rally kicked off in Kathmandu Durbar Square on Sunday, with the objective of publicizing tourism destinations of Nepal and raising fund for water projects in Nepal, India and Africa. The Government has decided to save 40 per cent of money spent on fuel for three-wheelers by converting them for running on gas. This will reduce the burden on both three-wheeler drivers and commuters due to recent fuel price hike. Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma told the Daily News that the fuel price hike is a heavy burden on the economy and this decision was taken with the objective of reducing the hardships of commuters. There are over 300,000 three-wheelers in the country and users are facing a difficult situation due to the petrol price hike.
