After commissioning regulator-cum-bridge across Thejaswini

A Rs. 50-crore project to assist localities that face drinking water shortage in Thrikkaripur due to intrusion of saline water will be commissioned shortly, said K. Kunhiraman, MLA. The project would be realized after commissioning the regulator-cum-bridge across the Thejaswini that would link Kayoor-Chemeni pachayath and Neeleshwaram municipality, Mr. Kunhiraman said.

Result of failure of monsoons in 2012

Groundwater level in the district has gone down – drastically in a few places - thanks to the failure of monsoons in 2012. Recent reports with the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board suggests that the average drop in water level is five metres in the district. The Board monitors water supply twice a year – before and after monsoon in May and January – using the 38 observation wells it has dug across the district, covering all the 12 panchayat unions.

The state government is taking special precautions to overcome the challenge of paucity of drinking water in commonly draught-affected Bilaspur district this summer and 25 new hand pumps would be set up in each subdivision this summer here in the district.

This was stated by Ram Lal Thakur, chairman, HP State Planning Development and 20-Point Implementation Committee, while talking to mediapersons at Suharghat, 42 km from here, on Tuesday.

Compensation to be credited to their savings bank accounts

The State government has sanctioned Rs.60 crore for the distribution of compensation to 1.28 lakh farmers who suffered more than 50 per cent crop loss due to drought, according to Collector N.Venkatachalam. To add to the problems, the shortage of piped water supply will go up to 40 MGD from May 20, 2013, as against the present 20 MGD deficit per day. Water Board is supplying about 320 MGD per day as against the normal requirement of 340 MGD per da. The supply will be reduced to 300 MGD from May 20. Shortage of piped drinking water supply has direct effect on the usage of ground water.
