TURA: In view of the severe water crisis in Tura and surrounding areas, West Garo Hills District Administration held a meeting with the lines departments, civil societies, Church leaders and locality development committees on Friday afternoon to discuss an urgent action plan to tide over the current water crisis.

The emergency meeting was necessitated amidst reports of fights erupting out of frustration over water scarcity, wanton wastage of water and illegal tampering of pipes by unauthorized plumbers.

SHILLONG, March 24: Meghalaya has seen a decline in the elephant population. The number of elephant population in the State has declined by 579.

SHILLONG, Dec 28: During the five years period from 2006-2011, only 35 villages in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya were electrified.

Shillong: Glaring anomalies in the functioning of department of health and family welfare has deprived thousands of people of West Garo Hills with basic health care benefits ,revealed the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

Holding the department of health and family welfare responsible for the deprivation of basic health care in West Garo Hills, the CAG directly stated that patient care suffered due to shortage of Community Health Centres (CHCs) Public Health Centres (CHCS) and Sub centres (SCs) and inadequate infrastructure like non-functional operation theatres, lack of ultra sound,ECG and 24x 7 diagnostic services, besides the absence of medical specialist.

SHILLONG: Out of 365 villages which have been awarded with the Nirmal Gram Puraskar (NGP) 2011 Award, it is suprising that none of the villages from Jaintia Hills received the award.

As per the total sanitation campaign report, which showcases the performance of the Khasi Hills, Jaintia and Ri-Bhoi, it was mentioned that one of the no villages from Jaintia Hills qualified to get the NGP Award for 2011.

Floodwaters in the plains belt of Garo hills in western Meghalaya have gradually receded but not without leaving a devastating impact on agriculture, the mainstay of the inhabitants of the area.

SHILLONG: Even though West Garo Hills district is the highest achiever in the State having done away with open defecation, it is still lagging behind in making schools ‘open defecation free’.

According to available statistics, 45 per cent schools in the district still lack sanitation facilities although during the year 2011 a total of 216 villages in the West Garo Hills were awarded the ‘Nirmal Gram Puraskar’.

Shillong: A roadmap drawn by the state in achieving Nirmal Meghalaya has shown an upward trend in the graph as far as the sanitation status or toilet average is concern with over 73 percent achievement, which is more than the national average, experts claimed.

Experts of the Water and Sanitation Programme-South Asia (WSP-SA) has claimed that the state can become Nirmal Meghalaya in a period of two years adding that Meghalaya is one of the leading states as far as implementation of Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) now known as Nirmal Bharat Abiyan (NBA) in rural areas of the state is concerned.
