One more wildlife sanctuary will dot Karnataka which already has 22 wildlife sanctuaries. The State government has officially declared a part of the Kollegala Range Forest as Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary. Off the 1,224 sqkm of the Range forest, 906.18 sqkm (90,618.75 hectares) has been declared as sanctuary.

Ahmedabad: The battle over the translocation of lions from Gujarat to Madhya Pradesh is back in the Supreme Court. The Gujarat government on Tuesday moved a petition challenging the April 15 order which directed the state to translocate lions to Palpur-Kuno wildlife sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh.

Jaipur:Around 29,692 hectares of forest land is under encroachment in Rajasthan, according to the latest figures of the ministry of environment and forests. While the country boasts of over 19.57 lakh hectares of encroached forest land as compared to 17,94,879 hectares in 2009.

The data shows that the encroachments on forest land have increased over the past five years in the country. Rajasthan already has very few natural forests. The statistics for the last five years show that Bundi district in the state leads with 8878 hectares of encroached forest land. Followed by Chittorgarh 6354 hectares and Dungarpur 4426 hectares. Alwar had 454 hectares, Dausa 372 hectares, Hanumangarh 113 hectares and Ajmer had 45 hectares of forest land under encroachment.

Sterlite asked to deposit Rs. 100 crore with Collector

The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Sterlite copper smelter plant to deposit within three months a compensation of Rs.100 crore with the Tuticorin Collector. A Bench of Justices A.K. Patnaik and H.L. Gokhale said this amount would be put in fixed deposit in a nationalised bank for a minimum of five years, renewable as and when it expired, and the interest would be spent on suitable measures for improvement of the environment after consultation with the TNPCB and approval of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

In the result, the appeals are allowed and the impugned common judgment of the High Court is set aside.

SC asked Sterlite Industries to pay Rs 100 crore as compensation for polluting environment through its copper smelting plant in Tuticorin, but refused to uphold closure of the plant ordered by Madras High Court in 2010.
