No option to road via Bandipur

6-day wildlife census begins
The six-day wildlife census with focus on tigers began on Saturday.
Chief Wildlife Warden R. Sundararaju told The Hindu at Kotagiri on Sunday that five tigers had been sighted in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. He said that one tiger was sighted in the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve and pug marks were seen at many places.

Parambikulam Tiger Reserve opened
PALAKKAD: Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh on Friday said the tiger population in 18 of the 38 tiger reserves in the country “may die out any time.”
Inaugurating the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve, the 38th in the country, at Anappadi (Parambikulam), he said there were only nine functioning tiger reserves in the country.

Tiger sighting in new reserve

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It was almost as though the news had reached them. Just over a fortnight ago — February 2 to be exact — five tigers were sighted close to the tourism zone in the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala, which was declared the country’s 38th tiger reserve on Friday.

Parambikulam to be declared tiger reserve
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Parambikulam wildlife sanctuary in Palakkad, will be declared a tiger reserve on February 19 by Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh. The sanctuary is home to some of the most endangered species of animals and birds. The sanctuary will become the second ‘tiger reserve’ in Kerala after Thekkady wildlife sanctuary.
