POISONOUS WATERS

According to the sources in the Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED), Bangladesh, arsenic, a chemical which causes black foot disease, has been found in 44 of the 64 districts. Over 25,000 tests conducted couritry-wide showed that'21 per cent of the tested tubewells were contaminated above the maximum permissible limit of 0.05 mil- ligrams per litre. The PHED started monitoring the water in the bordering districts of India in 1993.
