Romania rejects garbage from Italy
Italy's garbage woes are nowhere near its end with Romania recently rejecting the possibility of accepting the excess garbage from Naples. Romanian environment minister Attila Korodi announced this on May 30.
Italian cities have lately been littered with garbage due to a lack of sufficient landfill sites in the country. With mountains of trash rotting on the streets, Italian authorities have been looking for temporary solutions like re-opening closed landfills and sending garbage to other places. It had approached Romania, a new European Union (eu) member, to accept some of the garbage. But Bucharest firmly refused any such possibility. "Our infrastructure is not developed enough to handle our own waste,' said Korodi.Earlier he had said that Romania would not become the garbage can of other eu member states as the country's pact with the eu allowed it to refuse waste from other countries until 2015.
