Madurai clean up

new and more effective methods are to be adopted for waste disposal in Madurai. According to Madurai corporation commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi, the corporation has decided to gradually phase out the use of bullock carts to transport solid waste from the city. There are also plans to involve private operators to assist in the production of manure from solid waste. The system to be followed will be the same as the one pursued in Chennai.

Pointing out the advantages of the new schemes, Bedi said that the manure could be sold at Rs 3.50 per kg while the collection of garbage per day was estimated to be around 400 tonnes. He also announced the introduction of 35 tractors and 12 dipper lorries to "clear the solid waste immediately to the composite yard in time.' A team of councillors from the Madurai Corporation has already visited Chennai to study the finer aspects of garbage management strategy followed by the city.
