Animal farming opposed

Animal farming opposed British farmers are on the defensive as opposition mounts from animal welfare groups on current animal farming practices. In early February, a group of about 2,000 animal lovers clashed with the police in an attempt to prevent a truckload of veal calves from reaching the small port of Brightlingsea in eastern England en route to France. Similar violent protests have also held up the transit of live calves and lambs to France and the Netherlands.

"Other aspects of modern farming will come under scrutiny in turn, and the industry must be prepared for this," William Waldegrave, the British minister for agriculture, sounded a warning note.
