Better water resources management: greater resilience today, more effective adaptation tomorrow

This perspective document addresses water as a primary medium through which climate change will have an impact on people, ecosystems and economies, and aims at achieving and sustaining water security through water resources management in order to build resilience to current climate variability, while building capacity to adapt to future climate change. It focuses on opportunities for enhancing management capacities, for strengthening information systems, and for building infrastructure to enhance resilience to impacts of climate change such as: changing rainfall and river flow patterns; increased uncertainty and shifting crop water requirements; intensification of droughts, floods, typhoons and monsoons; growing around water-borne disease incidence; glacier melt, glacier lake outburst; and sea level rise.
