On alert

INDIANS Could be at the mercy of a host of new deadly diseases. A recent report by Kalyan Banerjee, director of the National Institute of Virology, Pune, warns that viral infections hitherto little known in the country are emerging. The report has cautioned against the possible entry of the yellow fever virus in India. Of particular concern is the fact that the mosquito species Aedes Aegypti has spread all over the country and yellow fever spreads wherever this mosquito goes.

The spread of the mosquito in Kenya and Ethiopia had coincided with the outbreak of yellow fever in these regions recent years. "It would be prudent f6rAndia to be on guard," says the report which suggests checking the entry of Ae4es Aegypti in ports and quarantining vaccinated travellers coming from regions under the grip of yellow fever. No c4se of yellow fever has been reported in India till date. The spread of dengue feveY in the country is also being attributed,to Aedes Aegypti mosquito.
