Shift Zoos

For the first time in India's history, a writ petition has been filed in the High Court to shift a national zoological park. The petition filed by People for Animals (PFA), a group led by Maneka Gandhi, draws the court's attention to the pitiable conditions in the Calcutta Zoo. It argues that century-old methods are being used for animals upkeep. A team of PFA visited the zoo and found gross violations of the Recognition of Zoo Rules, 1"2. On their visit, the team found that deer were being kept in enclosures which did not have a single grass of blade, while the elephants were chained Bud the tigers were being made to sit on a concrete platform.
