Fishing problem

The fish population in the rivers and flood planes of Bangladesh is rapidly falling. Statistics collected by a local district fishery office revealed that the production of fish in the Nawabganj district has come down from 4,225 metric tonnes in 1996 to 3,820 metric tonnes in 2000. "Factors which have led to the decline include skewed government policies, indiscriminate use of insecticides and unplanned construction of dams,' said Anwarul Haque, fishery officer of Nawabganj. The rivers which have registered a decline in the fish population are Padma, Mahananda, Pagla and Punarbhaba.
