Lake protection

the Union Cabinet has approved the conservation of the Dal Lake within the framework of the National Lake Conservation Project as proposed in the Ninth Plan. According to an official spokesperson of the ministry of environment and forests, the government will take up the issue of rehabilitation and compensation of the people its will be affected by the project with the Jammu and Kashmir government.

The planning commission has already committed an amount of Rs 87.10 crore as special plan assistance for eco-restoration of the Dal Lake and other components like acquisition of land for peripheral sewerage system in the lake, land development of peripheral area and acquisition of land for settling basin in Telbal Nallah and for marginal dredging. The Dal Lake conservation plan was pending since the Eight Plan and was included in the Ninth plan following the planning commission declaring the project as a 100 per cent centrally-sponsored scheme.
