Draft EIA report of 4.30 MTPA limestone mining at Belgaum, Karnataka of Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Ltd.

Project type -  Mining, extraction of natural resources and power generation ( for a specified production capacity)

Project Details - Limestone mine of 1228.6 Ha It is proposed to mine 4.3 MTPA of limestone from the lease. This mine will supply the Greenfield cement plant. The mine will be operated by opencast method and involves drilling, blasting, loading and transportation. The project involves Reserve Forest area near Metgud, Petlur, Budni Khura and Mallapur. Impact on Air environment: The air borne particulate matter is the main pollutant contributed by opencast mining. Mining activity will result in increase in dust SPM concentrations in mining lease area and surrounding area. The sources of fugitive dust emmission would due drilling and blasting sites; vehicular movement; smoke from HEMM equipment and tippers will generate NOx and SO2 emmissions. Impact due to Noise Environment The major noise source from the mines is drilling, blasting, movement of machinary and transport. Impact on water environment:The water requirement of the proposed mine is 100 cubic meters per day. Analysis of Alternatives (Technology and Site) No alternate sites have been considered and no mention has been made regarding the alternative technology. Alternative technology in mining would include surface mining where drilling and blasting is not involved.
