Thailand

Labelling of genetically modified (gm) food will be made compulsory in Thailand by the end of year 2001. This decision follows a ban on gm field trails in the country. Thailand is one of the world's leading food exporting countries. It exports to countries such as the uk and Saudi Arabia, where labelling of gm food is mandatory. "Thailand has taken this step to protect Asia from the threat of genetic engineering,' said Auaiporn Suthonthanyakorn of Greenpeace, an international pressure group.
