Parking brakes

  • 14/02/2008

Beijing authorities are considering increasing parking fees in busy areas to discourage people from driving and encourage use of public transport. Areas likely to be targeted are busy commercial districts like cbd and Zhongguancun, and congested areas like Yansha and Beijing Western Station, according to the Beijing Muni-cipal Development and Reform Commission. Parking fees in the busiest areas are 2.5 yuan (US $0.35) per half hour for small cars and 10 yuan (US $1.40) per hour for large vehicles, about 3 yuan (US $0.42) more than in other areas. The construction of public parking facilities outside downtown areas will be encouraged. Car and bicycle parking will be created together at railway terminal and bus centres. Park-and-ride will be encouraged.

Around major public places the government is looking at affordability. About 26 free or low-cost, large parking lots will be built near metro and bus stops to encourage drivers to use public transport in downtown Beijing. Parking fees near major subway stations and bus terminals on the city's outskirts are to be lowered to encourage people to use public transport to get into the city.
