Compliance Report of the Chief Secretary, Government of Uttar Pradesh in O.A. No. 116 of 2014 with O.A. No. 437 of 2015 in the matter of Meera Shukla Vs Municipal Corporation Gorakhpur & Others on control of pollution in river Gomti.

On November 28, 2019 the Chief Secretary, Government of Uttar Pradesh after going through the compliance reports filed by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board and Urban Development Department, directed the Principal Secretary, Urban Development Department, government of Uttar Pradesh vide letter dated November 28, 2019 to take immediate action to stem the pollution which would include starting bio-remediation of untapped drains falling into river Gomti and Ramgarh Tal in Gorakhpur and fix a timeline for the establishment of sewage treatment plants (STPs) for the drains so that it could be reviewed regularly for effective and timely control of pollution.

The report stated that the polluted river stretch of Gomti has been identified by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) from Sitapur to village Kaithi, district Ghazipur, the confluence point in river Ganga. The length of the polluted river stretch is 628 km. The action plan for control of pollution of river Gomti was under implementation and being periodically monitored by the River Rejuvenation Committee, Uttar Pradesh.

Further, the water quality of the river was being monitored regularly at 25 points from Pilbhit to Varanasi. The water quality has been showing an improved trend as a result of the implementation of the action plan and during the months of April-June 2019, out of 11 monitoring points, at 7 monitoring points the pollution level has been showing downward trend. In support of this, the report also contained the comparative data of water quality monitoring for the said period.
