Inspection report of Joint Committee in Original Application 54/2020 in the matter of Ambattur lake pollution in Ambattur taluk of Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu.

The National Green Tribunal, Southern Zone, Chennai had directed a Joint Committee to look into the matter and submit a report on the removal of encroachment and steps taken to prevent discharge of untreated sewage into the lake and save the lake from pollution.

The Committee was also asked to prepare an action plan - with remediation measures required to improve the water quality. The committee during inspection observed that sewage/sullage was being let into the Ambattur lake from the existing drainage constructed by the Housing Board, Ayapakkam. Sewage water was also being let into the Ambattur lake directly through earthern drain in the areas of Moontrunagar and Ganapatht Nagar in Thirumullaivoyal village.

The Public Works Department has stated that nearly 1200 houses were evicted in the year 2008 in the eastern side of the lake and 150 houses were evicted in the year 2018 in the southern side of the lake. The committee observed that there are some temporary thatched houses around the lake. There was no discharge of industrial effluent into Ambattur lake.
