Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of S. Srinivas Rao & Others Vs State of Andhra Pradesh dated 06/04/2022.

Grievance in the application is against unscientific dumping of marble slurry on agricultural land near Harischandrapuram railway station, Kotabommali mandal, Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh, adversely affecting the environment and public health. The marble slurry is generated from the Marble Polish units located at Nimmada, Peddabammidi and Yetturallapdu, in violation of the Water Act 1974, Air Act 1981 and Environment Act 1986.

The NGT directed a joint committee to undertake visit to the site, interact with the stakeholders and prepare an action plan. The committee would be entrusted to ascertain the practices of slurry disposal at notified sites as per Air and Water Acts, prescribe consent conditions for slurry generating industries for slurry utilisation and preventing damage to the environment, including agriculture and remediation of existing sites.
