Objectives

The India Meteorological Department was established in 1875. It is the National Meteorological Service of the country and the principal government agency in all matters relating to meteorology, seismology and allied subjects.

Heavy rains to continue, says Met dept

New Delhi: The heavy rains lashing parts of central, southwest and northern India is likely to continue to for some days as the withdrawal of southwest monsoon from the country has been delayed by almost 15 days. The India meteorological department (IMD) in its latest weather forecast said, normally, the southwest monsoon starts withdrawing from western parts of Rajasthan around September 1.

Radar in, but won’t be put to use before monsoon is out

Almost five months after the state-of-the-art radar, S Band, arrived in the city for more accurate weather prediction, it seems that the technology will not be put to use this monsoon. The reason: India Meteorological Department is yet to finish the earthing and wiring which would make the radar operational. The Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) made radar arrived in the city this April.
