The annual Best Global Green Brands report for 2014, released together by consultancies Interbrand and Deloitte, has ranked top 50 global brands across 10 major sectors. Companies that have been assessed are from diversified business sectors--automotive, electronics, sporting goods, FMCG, technology, home furnishing, beverages, services, transportation, sporting goods.

The report examines the gap that exists between a brand’s environmental performance and consumers’ perceptions of that performance.

Automotive Sector

Automotive brands continue to focus on efficiency and style. With the 10 brands hailing from the automotive sector, the automotive brands make up 20 per centof the top 50 brands and represent four of the top five brands in the report thus demonstrating the lead taken by the this sector in rankings for the sustainable and socially-responsible initiatives

• The leading automotive brands of the year include - Ford (#1), Toyota (#2), Honda (#3) and Nissan (#4).

• With new environmental action committees in place, improved employee engagement around sustainability, better water/energy/emissions intensities, enhanced green build policies and increased waste recycling, Ford claimed first position.



Toyota slipped to no. 2 position after remaining on top since 2011, when the first edition of this report was published. But continues to pioneer and innovate in the fuel-efficient automobile market and boasts more than 2 million hybrid vehicles in the United States, which is more than any other automotive manufacturer.

• Honda (#3) is involved in a variety of Corporate Citizenship and sustainable activities. The company has remained transparent over the years about its efforts and, as a result, has witnessed a high score in regards to perception. In September 2013, the company earned one of the highest disclosure scores among all global companies in the CDP Global 500 Climate Change report.

• Hyundai with rank no 40 was ranked last in the automotive sector.



Beverages

Only two global brands from the beverages sector ranked in this sustainability list. Two global brands - -Cola Cola and Pepsi were ranked at 20 and 30 positions in this global green brand ranking


Electronics Sectors

With 5 brands hailing from the electronic sector, the electronic brands make up 10 per centof the top 50 brands.





• All five brands have improved their ranking in 2014 (as compared to 2013)

• Panasonic with fifth position in this ranking as the leading electronics brand, boasts a gap score of +13.9.

• Nokia with sixth position improved its ranking as compared to #9 position in 2013.

• Sony moved up five positions to take up seventh rank and entered into top 10 position for the first time.

• Philips having jumped from 23rd rank to 14th rank in 2014 and remains committed to making the world healthier and more sustainable through innovation. The company’s EcoVision program aims to improve its overall energy efficiency through meaningful, sustainable innovations.




Technology Sector

With seven brands hailing from the technology sector, the electronic brands make up 14 per centof the top 50 brands. Dell with tenth position is the only technology brand amongst top 10 global green brands. In 2013, too Dell was ranked #10



• Samsung jumped from 16th rank in 2013 to 11th rank in 2014.

• HP and CISCO with #17 position and #33 position in 2014 fell by five positions from #12 and #28 rank in the Interbrand 2013 global brand sustainability report.

• Microsoft with rank no 41 was ranked last in the technology sector. It was ranked at #35 in 2013 and had slipped by six position this year



FMCG Sector

With seven brands hailing from FMCG Sector, the FMCG brands make up 14 per centof the top 50 brands. Major brands – Johnson & Johnson with #12 rank and Nestle with #18 rank fell by six and four position in 2014.



• L’Oreal the famous cosmetic brand in this sector ranked at #22 slipped by two position in the overall Interbrand sustainability ranking this year.

• Colgate with rank no 48 was ranked last in the FMCG sector. It was ranked as the 50th global green brand in 2013 and climbed up by two positions in 2014










Apparel Sector

Only two global brands from the apparel sector – Zara and H &M ranked in this global sustainability list of brands. Zara climbed up by 14 places to claim #34 rank in 2014.

H & M with rank #39 has climbed up by three positions in 2014


Business Services

Two brands from the business services sector IBM and Xerox ranked amongst top 50 global green brands. Both IBM and Xerox with #25 and #27 ranks respectively climbed up by two places this year. IBM was at #27 place while Xerox was at #29 position in 2013.


Sportgoods Sector

Two brands from the sportsgood sector Adidas and Nike ranked amongst top 50 global green brands. Adidas entered into top eighth position for the first time. Nike slipped by two places and was ranked at #29 position


Financial Services

Allianz and Citi did not rank amongst top 50 global green brands in 2014. AXA fell by one place to get #45 rank and Santander moves up two places to #44
