Ground water level scenario in India (Pre Monsoon 2013)

Ground water levels are being measured four times a year during Pre Monsoon, March/April/May, August, November and January. The ground water regime monitoring was started in the year 1969 by Central Ground Water Board. At present a network of 19427 observation wells located all over the country are being monitored. Ground water samples are being collected from these observation wells once a year during the month of March/April/May to obtain background information of ground water quality changes on regional scale. The Groundwater level data is collected from all the states except Mizoram & Sikkim and UTs of Daman & Diu and Lakshadweep where Water level monitoring is not being carried out. The groundwater level monitoring for Andaman and Nicobar is done but the data is not entered in GEMS. The database thus generated forms the basis for planning the ground water development and management programme. The ground water level and quality monitoring is of particular importance in coastal as well inland saline environment to assess the changes in salt water/fresh water interface as also the gradual quality changes in the fresh ground water regime. This data is used for assessment of ground water resources and changes in the regime consequent to various development and management activities.
