Goa beaches ‘tarred’. Rogue ship to blame?
Panaji: Goa’s picture-postcard credentials have taken a severe beating, with tar balls washing up on some of its popular beaches from Monday. Operations to clean up beaches were on all of Wednesday even as more of the oily residue washed ashore.
Tar balls were first seen on beaches in south Goa on Monday afternoon.

The Orissa government has appointed a committee to look into cases of excessive mining of iron, chromite, and manganese ore by companies in disregard of existing laws. Headed by the Director of Mines, the six-member committee would submit a report on the companies who dug out the ores in excess of the prescribed limit.

Decision on Vedanta in a week
THE environment ministry is likely to take a decision on the fate of Vedanta’s mining project in Orissa in a week. The NC Saxena panel, appointed by the ministry, had on Monday recommended that the company not be allowed to mine in the Niyamgiri hills.
The Forest Advisory Committee will be meeting on August 20 to consider recommendations of the expert panel.

Service stations closed down for not complying with pollution norms
On the directions issued by the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC), two service stations operating from Industrial Area, Phase II, were sealed today for causing water pollution, being operational without a valid license to operate and not complying with various other provisions.
