Solairedirect Energy India Pvt Ltd, a unit of Paris-based solar engineering firm Solairedirect Group on Wednesday inaugurated a 5.6 MW solar park under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). This is the company's first project in India.

The solar park will generate 9000 MWh per annum, enough to power 20000 Indian households.

To give a boost to its efforts to bring down the cost of solar power in India, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is planning to roll out large megawatt size solar power projects, in the order of 500 MW and above.

“We want to bring in volume in the Indian solar sector. Several states have already rolled out mega-sized solar power projects, its needs to be done at central level too,” said Tarun Kapoor, joint secretary, MNRE.

The Government has decided that 75 per cent of 750 MW solar projects, to be offered under the second phase of Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, will be built with local content.

This publication analyzes the performance of two states in India— Karnataka and Tamil Nadu— in their efforts toward installing solar and wind energy. It attempts to distill the reasons for their success, albeit in two very different renewable energy programs.

In a bid to make renewable energy technology deployment strategies politically acceptable, many countries are linking them to socio-economic goals, such as job creation, economic development and building competitiveness. A controversial industrial policy tool that is becoming increasingly popular is the use of local content requirements (LCRs).

Rajasthan is set to play a major role in solar and renewable energy, according to its Governor Margaret Alva.

“Energy is the key to progress. At the same time, it is a big challenge too. Rajasthan is a national leader in solar energy and under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, a majority of the solar projects are located in Rajasthan. In wind energy, India is globally positioned at No. 5, generating 11,000 MW after the U.S., Germany, China and Spain,” she said.

This documents is prepared based on draft guide lines issued by MNRE for selection of 750 MW New grid connected Solar Power projects Under JNNSM Phase-II, Batch-I and may undergo changes.

290 MW of solar photo voltaic capacity has been commissioned as of April 15 out of the 340 MW of projects awarded under the second batch of the first phase of the National Solar Mission.
