More than one million lumberjacks in China are expected to become tree planters under a nationwide forest-conservation project. The project, which will cover 61 per cent of the mainland's major forests, will see more than one million employees in the forestry industry lose their jobs by 2000. According to the plan, the first phase of the project, from this year to 2000, will require investment of 19.5 billion yuan (HK$18 billion).
