Nearly 200 autorickshaw drivers are behind bars following a police crackdown on their vehicles run on polluting kerosene instead of petrol, while other offending drivers are keeping off the roads to avoid the dragnet. With the floating population in Bangalore also up in the last tow days due to the CET exam, there was a sudden "auto crunch" putting commuters to hardship. A drive was launched five days ago to check high pollution levels due to use of kerosene in autorickshaws, which costs the drivers only around Rs 18 to 19 a litre in black market as against Rs 32 a litre of petrol.
