Navi Mumbai: Residents of sector 15 were in for a shock after numerous trees were hacked in the area on Wednesday. Besides, trees were also reportedly cut down just a kilometer away near the Cidco guest house. Civic officials said, around 206 trees needed to be dislodged from the roadside for the one-time development plan. "We are planning to replant the trees on the Belapur-Uran service road. They had to be removed for civic projects," said NMMC executive engineer Sanjay Desai. Some locals said that most of the trees had been chopped, so it was impossible to replant them. "A lot of care needs to be taken for replanting fully uprooted trees. Horticulturists need to conduct intensive groundwork to ensure that they grow well in the new location. These precautions were not taken at sector 15. We just hope that new trees are planted," said Anarjit Chauhan, an activist. Another resident, Charuhas Satam, said, sometimes, trees have to be dislodged for civic projects. "Locals must check that the saplings are not planted very close to each other, as that will not be good for growth," he said. Meanwhile, several big trees were chopped to clear a forested patch in Killegaothan area near Cidco guesthouse, said residents.
