2.2 lakh hectares of agri land submerged in Aila

The country has suffered a financial loss of several hundred crores of taka in agriculture and its sub-sectors, including fisheries, poultry and livestock, due to the cyclone Aila, said sources at the ministry concerned on Sunday. Various types of standing crops on about 2.20 lakh hectares of land in 25 districts have already been submerged due to the tidal wave, said a preliminary report prepared by the Department of the Agricultural Extension (DAE) till date. The submerged crops are seedbeds of aus, transplanted aus, sweet potatoes, betel leafs, sesame, maize and chillis. Even the cyclone also caused a heavy loss to mangoes in the northern districts, including Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Dinajpur and Thakurgaan, the report added. Field Service Director of the DAE Haripada Majumder told BSS that "about 20-30 per cent crops are fully damaged, but in the case of seed beds, it is about cent per cent". The rehabilitation programme following the final damage assessment of the crops is under process and it may be submitted to the ministry within the next week, confirmed by the DAE official. Under the rehabilitation programme, the government will prefer suitable crops for the respective zones along with other crops like transplanted aman, wheat, maize, mustard and pulses, said the official. The worst cyclone-affected districts are greater Barisal, Bagerhat, Sathkhira, Jessore, Chittagong, Noakhali, Feni and Lakkhipur. On the other hand, the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) has already finalised a rehabilitation programme involving Taka 190 crore, official sources said. The devastating cyclone Aila caused deaths of some 3,570 cattle heads, 1,493 buffaloes, 6,867 goats, 1,474 lambs, 1.24 lakh 168 poultry birds and 39,795 ducks, said a primary report of the DLS. Besides this, some 1,52,386 acres of pastureland, some 200 cattle farms, and 761 poultry and duck farms across the country also have been damaged due to the onslaught of the cyclone. The DLS has supplied vaccines for 34,177 animals and 2,44,00 poultry birds in the cyclone-affected regions, director (extension) AKM Omar Faruq of the DLS said adding that treatment has also been provided for some 21,300 cattle heads and 1,59,000 poultry birds. Meanwhile, the Department of Fisheries (DoF) has estimated that the cyclone caused a financial loss of nearly 311 crore throughout the country. The estimated economic loss was around Taka 13,90,55,000 in Chittagong division, Taka 105,16,57,000 in Khulna division and Taka 191,47,54,000 in Barisal division. The cyclone also washed away the fishes of some 5,454 tonnes, shrimps of 12,380 tonnes, fish fries of 55.70 lakh in number and shrimp fries of 6.47 lakh in number, the DoF sources said. The affected districts are Cox's Bazar, Feni, Chittagong, Noakhali, Lakkhipur, Khulna, Jessore, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Barguna, Bhola, Jhalokhati, Pirojpur, Barisal and Patuakhali.
